Mike has over 25 years experience in field/research geophysics. He established Southern Geophysical Ltd. in 2002. Mike's has a BSc (1989) in microelectronics and engineering physics, a MSc in exploration geophysics (1997) and a PhD in geology (2004). Mike has worked in Europe, North America, Antarctica and all across New Zealand. With  decades of professional experience and with his academic background, Mike is highly skilled at determining the geophysical solution that is right for you and your project. Publications

Christian Ruegg - Geophysicist.Operations Manager

Operations Manager

Christian has a BSc and MSc in Geology from the University of Canterbury. He is also SGL's safety officer, bringing his extensive training and experience from Urban Search and Rescue to the workplace and the field. As, a senior member of our geophysics team, Christian says "My main responsibility is managing Multi-Channel Analysis of Surface Waves (MASW) surveys, both as crew chief in the field and data analyst in the office. I also work assisting with a variety of geophysical surveying techniques. I particularly enjoy the fact that working as a geophysicist demands the constant application of scientific problem-solving in dynamic and unique environments."

Rebecca received her BSc in Geology and Chemistry from the University of Canterbury in 2012 and then completed a Postgraduate Diploma in Geology. Rebecca has been working in the geophysics industry for over 6 years and is one of our senior project managers. She specialises in GPR and seismic methods and has specialist knowledge with geophysical software packages such as Surfer, Reflex W and CAD packages. When not working Rebecca enjoys hiking, snowboarding and mountain biking.

Travis Grace - Geologist. NDT Specialist

NDT Specialist

Travis received his BSc in Geology from the University of Canterbury in 2013, then went on to gain a Postgraduate Diploma in Engineering Geology. Prior to gaining his university degree, Travis worked in the field of avionics which has proved to be useful in understanding geophysical methods and applications. When not reveling in the world of geophysics, Travis can be found running up hills or climbing mountains.

Nick McConachie - .Geologist
Nick McConachie



Nick received his BSc in Geology and Geography from the University of Canterbury in 2013. Nick has many years experience working in the geophysics and geotechnical industries and specialises in GPR, down hole shear-wave testing and cross hole shear-wave testing. Outside work hours Nick spends most of his time snowboarding or mountain biking, where he has represented New Zealand and has taken him around the world.

Richard Mellis - .Geologist
Richard Mellis



Richard received his BSc in Geology from the University of Canterbury in 2014, then went on to gain a Masters of Science in Geology. Richard specialises in electrical resistivity testing (ERT) and GPR.  Richard is an outdoor enthusiast, who enjoys a wide array of activities in the elements including climbing and surfing.
